Irish Cultural Garden’s 2010 Activities Report

February 24th, 2011

The culmination of the 2010 season was the dedication and blessing of the new fountain at the          Irish Cultural Garden on October 30th. In preparation for the arrival of the fountain, the north end of the garden was completely refurbished including a new retaining wall, a six foot sandstone walkway that encircles the fountain structure and new gardens at the fountain and front entrance to the garden. The fountain operated daily until being shut down for the season in November. The Irish community looks forward to starting it back up in the spring as early as possible!

From March through November the ‘Irish Volunteers’ came monthly to maintain the garden. Annuals were again planted in May.  And in the fall 400 spring flowering bulbs were planted including daffodils and tulips. The Irish Garden recognizes and thoroughly appreciates the volunteers that show up month after month to weed, cut back perennials and clean trash and leaves from the garden. We had many first timers this season and hope to build on that enthusiasm in 2011. December 31th our New Year email greeting was sent to a list of over 350 friends and volunteers of the Irish Garden.

The Irish Garden Club website has been updated with new photos and links to videos of the               2009 Rededication and the 2010 Fountain Dedication.

In 2011 we hope to install four new author’s monuments, complete the front entry garden and begin to install our allee of crabapple trees. We also hope to begin a music & dance series in the garden sharing and celebrating our beautiful garden with the community while gathering support for future projects and maintenance of the garden.

TIME CHANGE! Fountain Dedication in Irish Cultural Garden–October 30, 2010

October 23rd, 2010

Join the Irish community in celebrating the dedication of the Irish Cultural Garden’s new fountain, a replica of a Dublin, Ireland fountain and made in Ireland, on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at NOON.

Free and open to the public.  Free parking along either MLK Jr. Blvd in front of the Garden at 1201 MLK Jr. Blvd, or above the Garden on East Blvd.  The Irish Garden is immediately north of the Superior Road bridge over MLK Jr. Blvd.

This marks the completion of the new additions to the north end of the Irish Cultural Garden which includes, besides the fountain and its surrounding terrace and irrigation system, seven granite pillars featuring the literary giants of Ireland and prominent local Irish community supporters, and plaques for Lonny McCauley and Bernadette Murphy.

See, below, a photo of the Dublin fountain which this new one is a replica of:

Irish Garden’s Regular Maintenance Crew Makes A Big Difference

September 16th, 2010

The frequent, clean-up activities of the Irish Cultural Garden’s volunteer maintenance crew, supervised by Char Crowley, continues to make a big impact on the Garden.  The results are one of the most attractive  Gardens in the 26 Garden chain as well as an inspiration to all of the groups active in maintaining each of the 26 Cultural Gardens.  Here’s a photo of the folks who volunteered in the week prior to September 19’s One World Day.
