Hungarian Garden Spring Clean Up–April 10, 2010

April 13th, 2010

The Hungarian Cultural Garden spring clean-up was successfully completed on Saturday, April 10th. Four energetic young volunteers from the Alpha Omega National Service Fraternity at Case Western Reserve University impressed us with their raking skills.  We were grateful for their help from 10 until noon–when we needed help the most!

Bela Szente’s Landscaping (Solon) provided a couple of his workers, as did Peter Zalay’s Parkteq Landscaping (Westlake).  Our own volunteers–Janos & Marika Megymori, Greg Polyak, Phil Ertel, Kati Gulden, Ernie Mihaly, Allen Waddle and myself, along with Ed Radick’s crew of ten, provided an army of backpack blowers and a platoon of rake wielding troops to sweep the four acres of our garden and gather up the leaves and debris.  Thanks to one and all!!

Thanks also to Ed Radick for the grill set-up for our hamburg and sausage lunch.

We had recently experienced some vandalism on our fountain.  The three “water lily” fountain heads were broken off, and one of the custom cast-aluminum heads was carried off.  Luckily it was discarded in the lower Garden and was recovered during the clean-up.  It will be repaired and reinstalled next week.

Ernie Mihaly is repairing the masonary work of the fountain pool, and will repoint the pool interior.

The Garden is looking great, is ready for another summer season, and our efforts over the last two years are clearly evident!

Concert in the Hungarian Garden

July 27th, 2009

The Hungarian Cultural Garden will hold a “Concert in the Garden” on Sunday, August 2, 2009, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. (The rain date is August 9 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.) The even it free and open to the public.

The concert will feature the music of Ferenc Liszt, who is commemorated in the Hungarian Garden. In fact, the dedication of a plaque to Liszt, on the occasion of his 123rd birthday, was the initial event in the Hungarian Garden in 1934. In addition to the concert, there will be a tree planting ceremony to replace the dogwood trees following the original garden design from 1938. Savor the soothing natural sights and trill to the music of Liszt! Bring a blanket or chair and a picnic basket and enjoy the entire afternoon!

See the website of the Hungarian Cultural Gardens for more details.
