Garden Clean-up with William Penn High School band students from York PA
35 band members and staff from William Penn High School in York, PA spent Friday afternoon, April 15th, cleaning up the Greek, Hebrew and Italian Cultural Gardens thanks to their initiative in seeking out volunteer opportunities in places where they visit, and thanks, too, to Business Volunteers Unlimited, Cleveland, OH for providing the site and service that links volunteers to community service opportunities in the Northern Ohio area. The Penn group probably holds the record for the most trash and plant matter cleaned up in two hours, so far: about 1700 cubic feet. Impressive! And much appreciated. Makes a world of a difference in the Gardens for the many sightseers and nearby residents alike who are in the Gardens every day. See the photo of ten of the students who worked in the Hebrew Cultural Garden, below.

Doan Brook Enhancement Project–Latest news on this new project
Northern Ohio Regional Sewer District held a meeting in January to get shareholders input on their design objectives for enhancement of Doan Brook in the section from East 105th & MLK Jr.Blvd lagoon north to just short of the Superior Road bridge where the Cultural Gardens begin.
A knowledgeable representative of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) attended the meeting.
Briefly, this new project will 1) Maintain current stream alignment; 2) Reconstruct a stable stream channel with the proper dimension, pattern, and profile that can handle local flows; 3) Improve the habitat through stable pools and riffles; creation of low-flow channel and thalweg (edit.definition: deepest parts of the brook and the fastest flowing); use terraced flood plains of re-used wall materials and use plantings that fit the park setting.
Additionally, their top Design Objective is: Minimize impact to the historic Cultural Gardens.
CCGF applauds NORSD for working with us to insure the best possible result for everyone affected.
