Here is an excellent interview with Khanlar Gasimov whose “Hearth” sculpture graces the Azerbaijan Garden. It is absolutely fascinating, speaking to the unique nature of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

Thanks for posting this Mark. It is a fascinating view of Gasimov’s perspective and experience in developing and implementing the Azerbaijani Cultural Garden. From my own perspective, I believe that this confirms that Gasimov was more interested in how his work would be seen from an artistic standpoint then in conveying Azeri cultural. While all of the Gardens suffer from a lack of informed, onsite comment on what the sculpture and designs are conveying about the cultural of their respective nationalities, the Azeri sculpture takes it to new heights. Hoping that we manage to use new tools (”iPods, smart phones, etc.) soon to deliver that commentary onsite in the future so that visitors won’t remain totally mystified by what the Gardens are trying to convey.
